O&K aren't writing M:I:IV but Abrams is involved in a producing capacity (though he likely won't direct - even though there's been no word I'd be surprised if he didn't direct the Trek sequel because he has not (as yet) committed to directing anything else before 2012).
Which means they won't go in production for STXII before Abrams has some time. So they plan their schedule with this background knowledge. When JJA hasn't time before 2011, why not stretch the writing process until 2011, so you have more time inbetween to discuss different things.

Yes, he is joining the writing team for the sequel - but I'm not sure how much time he is spending on Trek right now because I imagine they will still be heavily involved in preparing for the finale of Lost in May.

I'm not 100% sure how the process works from start to finish but I think that they would have to have the bulk of the script done by the end of this year in order for physical pre-production to begin.

Depending on what that is new in the film needs to be designed, conceptualised, tested and then built for filming (for example Ryan Church was involved in concept art for the show for over a year before the film started filming) so I'd imagine that towards the end of this year the script should be finalised.

By then it should also be clearer who may be directing - though I still feel Abrams will return in that capacity.

I rather wait 4 years and get a GREAT story then get a movie that is a pile of junk this year.

The story will be even more important this time around. The flashy coolness and feel-good reboot will have worn a bit thin. Take your time boys, take your time.

the cast will also be busy acting in other films to worry about Trek XII isn't that right, even though Simon Pegg wants to know how it is progressing

It'd be nice to get an a-lister in to direct. Then again they did that for Quantum of Solace and it was arse.

Don't give Trek to the Lost writer. He's not a science fiction writer, just an expert in smearing out an enigmatic, garbled, meaningless plot over 6 years. They'd better start delivering PDQ!!

In SciFiNow magazine, JJ said that they have no script and he is no closer to a decision as to whether he is going to direct it or not. All they seem to have is a release date.

I think that's common practice for big films however - in 2004 Sony had Spider-Man 3 locked into it's May 2007 release date before anything had been seriously done on it as well.

The Avengers has had a locked May 2012 release date for about 4 years now and they haven't even finished making all the individual introductory films required before it gets rolling as well.

Although, the longer he goes without committing to another film before Trek 12 then the more likely it seems to me that he will return.
