I actually met Roddenberry at a lecture he was giving in Laconia, New Hampshire back in the '80's. It was on the impact of Star Trek in every day life and, as I hear he usually did, he brought along the 16mm blooper reels from TOS. It was between TWOK and TSOS, so everyone wanted to know if Spock was going to come back.
I was a kid at the time and there were probably 20 or 30 of us that he stayed to talk to after the lecture. He stayed and talked to us for as long as we all had questions and signed whatever people asked him to. It was just a great experience for me and it made quite an impression on a 13 year old kid.

I tell you what, he was especially great with the teenagers/young adults and answered every question they had.

Agreed that he is a guy with strengths and flaws just like all humans. Kinda what he brought to Trek.
