Default Missed Opportunity: Kirk solo adventures !!!

Around the time of the filming of "Generations", there was some rumors that Kirk's character would indeed survive that film and there could have been a series of films revolving around Kirk, minus the rest of the cast which would have saved Paramount a lot of $$$.
Do you think in retrospect that could have been the way to go or would the films have been disapointments without the entire cast.
I think Bill would have gone on playing Kirk if given the chance.

Of that last I have zero doubt.

Maybe a series of made-for-TV movies, on the same aborted Universal Action Pack network that aired the TekWar films back in the early 90s? Perhaps that would've made enough money for someone, somewhere.

On the other hand, don't the Shatnerverse novels already do that? I haven't actually read one.

I could see doing it with the current cast, perhaps after the trilogy wraps (whether they should or not is another question). But I can't see selling ST with Shatner alone. He WAS Capt. Kirk; I give him that. But I'm not convinced he was ever really the star of the show. Leonard Nimoy was.

Never heard that rumour - would it at all be related to his spin-off books like The Return etc?

I don't think it would have saved Paramount a lot of money by 1990s terms. If I recall the cast outwith Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley were actually not paid that highly for any of the films (around $200,000 dollars by the last one IIRC from notes I've read in the past).

The most expensive cast members were the main trio.

However, while - like Sam - I literally have not a trace of doubt Shatner would have done it I doubt he could have supported a film franchise on his own. Even as Kirk. Not when Paramount also was getting their TNG franchise up and running. If he also had any kind of creative control over them (which, I would hazard a guess he would probably want) then I would be even more doubtful of their long term quality based on Shatner's V script and his series of books with Kirk.

In short, my belief would be it wouldn't work more than in a single film. Unless it was a series of TV movies - where generally you can make a series of TV films out of an idea like that better.
