It was never the same between the three after Spock's death, to me. It seemed awhile before they got a raport back and when they got it back, it never quite seemed the same, not in a bad way, it just seemed different.

Spock seemed more independent I think. He had a different quest he was on, one that his friends weren't on: get his brain back. In the series, he wouldn't embarass Kirk in public, but he did it all the time in IV.

That's an interesting point, hadn't thought of that, he did really seem to embarrass him quite a bit in IV. Regardless, I liked the way they changed the trio, it transformed, it grew, and the three themselves were different, even in the most subtle ways. Basically it could never go back to how it was in TOS. Those days were gone.

The trio is definitely loosened a bit in part 6. I don't think it's a bad thing, though. It's a necessary plot device. Yes, Kirk is livid with Spock. Then Kirk and McCoy end up in a very sticky situation and Spock feels directly responsible. This is now Spock's motivation for getting his friends out of trouble and setting the record straight. Yes, we definitely miss out on the classic exchanges between these three. But it serves the story well and we see just how vulnerable all three of them are when their ties to each other loosen. They are indeed at their best when they are a team. Even Spock and Bones, who act like they can't stand each other, are still the best of friends. They both know that they are better off with each other than without.
As for ST5, I am among those who do not dislike this movie, not in the slightest. Sure, it's a bit weaker than most of the others but it's still a great Trek story. It does suffer from some bad editing and budget restraints. But we do get a better look at the trio of Kirk, Spock and McCoy in this movie than in any other. Some of the scenes with the three of them make this movie well worth the price of admission.

Default The trio remains

Relationships evolve through time and experiences. Compare with any long-term partnership whether it's business, friendship or family. Anything that is tested through time will not remain constant. It usually becomes stronger and yet somewhat different from what is known before. That's what I see with Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

It's growing process and then it's a growing old process. Time and change has a habit of doing that to you.

Yeah, just like how Kirk needed glasses in Star Trek II.
