Default And the Oscar goes to...

There were two sci-fi movies selected this year for Best Picture, AVATAR and DISTRICT 9. Who should the Oscar go to and why?

Didn't see D9, but I'll be very surprised if either win.

Avatar won the Golden Globe. I'd be willing to bet that it wins the Best Pic at the Oscars.

I'm thinking Hurt Locker will get Best Director and Avatar gets the Best Pic. Could reverse I suppose, but the experts aren't seeing it.

Between District9 and Avatar, the former is the more original and has great special effects. The later is a special effects and comercial juggernaut. A win for either would not displease me greatly because I'd like to see a sci-fi film win in this catagory but I think it's highly unlikely D9 will win. Avatar of course is a (if not the) contender to be reconded with this year and it seems either it or The Hurt Locker are the most likely to win.

I'm thinking Hollywood is going to vote The Hurt Locker for Best Director, thus awarding a woman that honor for the first time in history, and Best Picture to Hurt Locker or Avatar. And BTW, the directors of those two films were once married.

It looks to be an Oscar telecast that I pay little attention to...

Why can't they just call it "Most Popular" instead of "Best" movie???????

Great question. They would certainly get higher ratings.

I dunno. Tradition? Habit? Pomposity? Inertia?
