I've been asked to settle a dispute between two friends that are casual TNG fans and, without watching the entire series over from "Farpoint" on, I figured I'd appeal to the masses here to see if anyone knew definitively.
Friend 1 says that Picard ordered his tea from the replicator as "Tea. Earl Grey. Hot." 100% of the time. Friend 2 says that at least once he only said, "Tea. Earl Grey." I'm inclined to believe that F2 could be right...because it sounds familiar...but I don't know which episode or film. Thoughts anyone? Thanks!! |

That sounds like a typical Trekkers Trivia War.
![]() I have no idea but as hot is kind of superfluous (would the computer produce cold tea if you don't say "hot"?) I think that Picard's order sans hot is perfectly possible. |

True...but it could be the kind of thing a writer could mess up.

Every time I remember hearing it the phrase was, "Computer: Tea, Earl Grey, hot."

Picard: Tea, Earl Grey, hot.
Janeway: Coffee, black. Chief O'Brian: Coffee, double sweet. Worf: Prune juice, chilled. |

I seem to remember a 'hot' in there from time to time.

"Tea, Earl Grey, Hot." I think that is what he says most of the time. I don't know if he says that 100% of the time or not.

I am probably overinterpreting but whereas drinking tea emphasized Picard's calm, thoughtful side, the staccato-like "Tea, Early Grey, hot." (instead of a more fluent and normal "Computer, hot Earl Grey Tea".) emphasized Picard's disciplined, military side.
In other words, when Picard orders tea and drinks it, you get his character in a nutshell. Last edited by horatio : 01-31-2010 at 01:00 PM. |

I like that interpretation. Oh, and I agree with friend #1. P.S. T'Pol: Water, cold. Me: Milk, Lactaid fat-free, cold.
