The article says that it's creative difference between the director and the studio..
I believe that. He didn't like his name attached to the crap that rolled out on the last one. He actually fought the venom thing but the studio pressured him.

Sadly I could never get engaged with the Spider-Man films. As blockbusters and superhero films go they just left me going 'so what?'.

I'm sure there are many waiting for this to come out, if only to maybe redress the third, but I'm not going to be one of them.
