I so totally agree. I enjoyed the SFX of Starship Troopers, but I always wondered "Why are they glorifying war? What did the bugs do to deserve war?" I did research about the original novel and affirmed my view of the movie. Yeah, the message was pretty blatant. If one doesn't get the meaning, it's still a good "pew-pew, bang" movie.

Or they can be like ST09: silly and meaningless, on the surface as well as ... well, no as well as there is nothing below the surface.
Here's where we have our "Siskel & Ebert" moment (where two friends and movie critics see the same film, but have different view points). I found 2009's "Star Trek" not to be silly and meaningless, but one of optismim and hope, with a message about friendship, cooperation, and most importantly, family. Kirk, Spock, and Nero all suffered loss of family, and they all dealt with it in there own way. So, fellow lover of movies, I'm going to have to give 2009's "Star Trek" two big thumbs up!

Fortunately Verhoeven is as subtle as a brick but there are certainly interesting comments that could be made about the future Earth Society depicted within the film.

Or one can just enjoy the bugs and explosions and Denise Richards!!

I kinda liked Dina Meyer for a while but circa 1997 it was all about Denise!!! These days not so much......probably would be Dina now actually.

I'd much rather bed someone who isn't dirty, both of those women are no screw zones. Everyone has been in their pants.

Wow! Has this thread devolved? Back to subject...

It's not surprising that a teen/angst/sci-fi movie would bother from previous teen/angst/sci-fi movies that deeply impacted the culture.

The original Starship Troopers novel is much slower critique on society in a fascist nation-state. Although it does have an "ahead of it's time use of men in armored suits" theme. Pretty cool.
