I don't know whether you have already watched TWOK, but ST09 is designed, at least in respect to Kirk, to be the antithesis to TWOK, to show the very characters traits of him which cause his success ... until that Khan fella shows up.

I'm going to watch TWOK tonight after I have watched Cranford. Which is a funny costume drama. So nothing like Star Trek

Indeed, but then again Kirk should blame himself. Other captains make detours to get their hands on some Tholian silk whereas he seems to purchase cloth from the Mudd Cooperation.
