Yes it was established. One of those love at first sight things... which is why the brains picked him. IIRC they both said that to each other. But its been awhile.

I sure think Pike will NOT be wheelchair-bound. He'll be on his feet in the sequel. Actually, I'll be joyful to see Pike (Bruce Greenwood only) in the sequel as it's not been announced one way or the other if he's there.

I agree! I think there is an opportunity for us to see Pike really kick a$$ in the sequel(s) since we didn't see much of him in the TOS universe.

I doubt that there is any place for him in the movie besides being Kirk's superior flag officer. But if he should really serve aboard a ship, why get him out of the wheelchair? It's hardly much of a handicap unless you work in engineering.

I'd think there may be scope for another appearance by Pike - but it could be anything from a substantial role or a new timeline continuity establishing cameo somewhere.
