And yet audiences seem to love it is the answer.

Since 2003 the top grossing theatrical release each year has been an installment in a major franchise or a sequel. That's what Hollywood pays attention to and that's why we get more of them.

Hollywood plays it safe to be sure, but remakes and the like have been part of Hollywood since it began, it's nothing new really.

Yeah. Alfred Hitchcock remade two or three of his own films early on. Hard to believe, but true.
