I'm not entirely convinced we're going to get a lot of red shirts in the first place. If a large portion of this movie take place during Pike's era, depending on how faithful they are to the uniform designs, the color scheme of that time period didn't include red. Of course we do know thanks to Yelchin that we'll at least see some red at the end of the movie, so it is possible. I'd also be perfectly fine if Abrams ignored the color schemes the Cage era uniforms and just stuck with what the majority of the audience is going to be familiar with (red, blue, and yellow).

Right...part of the reason the "red shirt" death total isn't the highest is that for the first few episodes of TOS even, there were no redshirts. Security wore blue...Spock and Uhura both wore gold (who knows why?).
