Or, if she knows the Trek characters, then sure, why not take a book or three along? Just as some are much better than others, some are more suitable for a 12 year old than others. 'The Kobayashi Maru' maybe?
Alternatively, you could go in a different direction altogether - I think I was about 12 when I read my first Agatha Christie novel.
Enjoy your weekend :-)
I agree fully! I was reading Star Trek at that age, and I haven't stopped since. As another said, if she's already interested in Trek then it should be a no-brainer. But, if she isn't interested in the franchise I wouldn't push it on her. Maybe she could try something like The Giver by the amazing Lois Lowry, or the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper.

I also enjoy Agatha Christie - perhaps Murder on the Orient Express?

Unfortunately many people may not even consider this book because it has the word "Satanic" in the title. It's really sad. I even know a few people that won"t let their kids read Harry Potter because they believe it teaches kids to want to practice magic... which they believe is Satanic itself. The way I see it... if the bad guys can cast spells... then the good guys should be able to cast BETTER/STRONGER spells!!

I was frowned upon at Bible College for looking for Biblical themes in Harry Potter. The truth is, any story about good versus evil could have a biblical theme to it.

In the case of the "Satanic Mill" it has a very strong politial/sociological theme.
The book follows the same folcloristic sources as Lucas did with Star Wars.

If you watch Star Trek TMP, and listen to the comm chatter when we first see Epsilon Nine, you'll hear some starships, their type (destroyer, scout...what not) and their registry numbers mentioned....when you look for them in that book, they match up.
