Default Are Star Trek Books Suitable for a 12 year old?

My niece who is 12 is constantly reading. My sister can't buy books fast enough for her. She had read all the Harry Potters that had been released by the time she was 8. She also enjoys the Twilight series.

I am babysitting this weekend and thought I could take her the Voyager Pilot and some books but although I think the books are definitely suitable, I wanted to check if others agreed with me before I inflict Star Trek on her.

Thanks

To be honest, I think there is better literature out there to build a taste on.
I think you would serve your niece better, if you rely on something by Roald Dahl for example.

Most Trek novels require knowledge of the ships, technology, cultures, politics and characters...

She has read all the Roald Dahl about 4 years ago. My sister is now thinking of giving her books by an Irish author called Maeve Binchy

How about 'The Hobbit'? or the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy?
Or, if she knows the Trek characters, then sure, why not take a book or three along? Just as some are much better than others, some are more suitable for a 12 year old than others. 'The Kobayashi Maru' maybe?
Alternatively, you could go in a different direction altogether - I think I was about 12 when I read my first Agatha Christie novel.
Enjoy your weekend :-)

I think she might have read Lord of the Rings too. I am only going to give her books that I have read and enjoyed. There was one book that I really disliked so I have left that one out. I'll also lend her Star Trek 101 to help her out if she doesn't understand something.

If she liked Harry Potter, this might be of interest to her :

Content wise, I don't think much of the content should pose a problem for a 12 year old. If stuff goes over her head, it's no biggie.

But if it's not her taste, she won't read it at all.

Yes, it is. They chose an unfortunate title for the translation. Spoils it a bit.
