Probably comes down to personal taste (as does the rest of the Spock/Uhura thing) but it was a little lightness amongst the characters. The idea that Kirk had an interest in this woman that he could never have because she already had feelings for another.

I liked it, but it may not strictly have been required.

"Not this time." ?

No, given the circumstances I can accept his logic was perhaps flawed in the moment at the end.

But it also reminded me of Spock's quick turnaround from 'we must protect the Horta' to 'Kill it Captain, NOW!!' in 'Devil in the Dark' as soon as the creature threatened Kirk.

And bearing in mind Spock at this point has still not balanced his emotions, it's appropriate that flashes remain.

And even later, NCC-73515. Spock would still sometimes grin in contentment...usually when playing the Vulcan Lyre....and sometimes when he knew that there was no arguing his logic. The grins were subtle, but definitely there.

He also had a definite emotional play in his sparring with McCoy as things went on as well. A playfulness that could only come from his human side enjoying their banter.

I know what bothers me about that sword, it's like the Babylon 5 ranger staff, only not as good.

Hmmm.... I think I would agree with that. I also thought the Darth Maul staff light sabre was nifty. But since it had already been established that Sulu knew how to use a sword I suppose they had to go with it.

They must all have some basic melee training and understanding of the sword: like in Day of the Dove.

Now to think on it, Picard fenced in canon, Sulu was under the influence of disease and just played around with a foil, probably stolen from the gym.

Maybe they should carry mirror mirror style daggers since they go hand-to-hand often. Phasers quit working a lot in TOS.

Why during the scene on the bridge when planing the attack on the Narada, Spock said he will "steal" the black hole device. How did he know it was stolen? How could of Kirk tell what he knows without mentioning Spock prime? "Uuuugh, it was on DVD on Delta Vega?!?!" For all the crew knows, the black hole device could of just been a Romulan weapon.
