I thought it better here, rather than disturbing the main movie forum with too many of my threads.

First question (2 part) -

Does all of Starfleet now use the Enterprise insignia and, if so, why?

The theory is that it was the Kelvin symbol and after her heroic death it was applied to all ships and buildings etc.

I never thought of that. I guess the 'tribute' idea makes sense.

It would have been really easy to convince me that all starships used the same insignia in TOS and only the star bases were different.

#2 Should Sulu's hand-to-hand combat training really be called something more like advanced specialized fencing, to include the katana?

#3 Who likes Sulu's sword? I might have liked it a decade ago, now it did not "wow" me. Too much like a mechanical 'lightsaber.' More practical than
Klingon short edged weapons, but too cheesy. etc....

#4 I need to view it again. What was the reason for no energy weapons
on the platform?

Possibly - but then that's a bit of a mouthful for Pike to spout in an emergency and a bit too specific for what he's looking for in that moment. He's really likely looking for people who can use their fists, and Sulu wants in on the action was my take.

I'm not really a sword afficionado so to me it didn't 'wow' me any more than it did in TOS. That said, if Zim finds this thread he'll be tripping over himself to agree on the lightsaber part.

#4 I need to view it again. What was the reason for no energy weapons on the platform?

I'd have to run the film through again but I'm suspecting it has something to do with the interference of the drilling beam perhaps rendering all but attenuated Romulan weapons useless near it.

Like it was also able to interfere with transporters and comms etc.

#5 Are new Starfleet slacks more like black jeans? Do they
have hot/cold control in the material? No stockings on some
female uniforms?

#6 Were the Kirk(chasing after)/Uhura scenes needed? Maybe use
her in more serious moments to show her character? The Spock romance
was very good and enough of the love element.

#7 Zachary ruled, but did Spock show too much emotion through his eyes?
Was Spock too roguish and glib for his character when he said,
"Not this time." ?
