He did in Dianne Duanne's "Doctor's Orders"

I must ltry ook it up, see if I can find it. I don't think it was in a novel. Of course, it could just be my memory being wrong completely.

After the movie, a friend of mine who never liked Star Trek or rather never watched it just fell in love with Star Trek and has been wanting to watch more so we watched the entire classic series recently. I don't recall a single instance where McCoy was ever in command. If Kirk wasn't on the ship, it was Spock. If both Kirk and Spock were gone then it was Scotty or in some cases Sulu. Since McCoy is so rarely on the bridge I think it would really stand out if he was ever in command of the Enterprise in the absence of Kirk or Spock.

Don't know where I got that idea from then - must be a malfunctioning multitronic component!

Until Kirk was run through the administrative disciplinary ringer, StarFleet probably would've put Kirk on what's known as "casual detail". That's sometimes what happens in the real-world military when there's not really a billet for cadets or junior enlisteds. (Yes, I know, Kirk was gunning for officer).

Anyhoo, casual detail was basically barracks upkeep, running errands for the company, and being on stand by for other details.

Agreed. But I belive McCoy was not in operational command becuse of the immediacy of the "court mratial."
