I never really gave it a chance before. I was bred on TOS and TNG primarily and we never watched DS9. So, all these years later, I shall finally get around to watching it

It's got a different feel to it, especially the early seasons.

I've always heard it was kind of like a Star Trek soap opera. Not sure if that's correct or not, but it really wouldn't be a problem if that is the case.

Well, it was the first of the Star Trek series to really use story arcs in the coarse of a season. I suppose that is why you have heard it called that. It works well though.

Is it similar to BSG in any respect?

Slightly darker in tone than other series, it shares that with Galactica although not to the same extent.

I appreciate that Moore wanted to take Trek in a more dark and realistic direction than the over-technobabbled Voyager.

Don't get me wrong, it's not all dark and gloomy all the time, it has a lot of light moments as well. Quark for instance tends to lend some comedic value. In fact, Quark is one of my favorite Star Trek characters. He's at least in the conversation.

Understood.

I tend to think that Moore, if he had been allowed to do so, would have made Voyager a much more realistic show. Voyager needed the grit of BSG and less silliness (Captain Proton). Moore had it figured out in DS9 (apparently a good balance of light and dark) and definitely had the winning formula with BSG.

I don't particularly like DS9 til the Dominion War starts then it gets interesting, but that's me. Until it showed us a war it never improved upon or really added to the Star Trek Universe. Pretty much they sat on a space station and goofed off in runabouts. But the actors give it their all and in the absence of TV Trek you should enjoy yourself.
