I think that the problem with Khan is that his origins would be similar, he is an augment from the late 20th / early 21st century and was frozen or made it somehow else than aboard the Botany Bay into the 23rd century. Kirk would once again have to defeat this megalomaniac superman.
Other characters from TOS are less explored, be it a Klingon antagonist for Kirk (STNV/Phase II shows how well this diea works) or races they have only encountered once.

Although she was only in that short deleted scene, she had something. No bimbo like Gaila, harder to crack for Kirk.

I would rather not have Khan in the next movie. But if they do Nimoy should be in it. After all he died saving the enterprise from him. It would be fascinating to hear what he had to tell the new crew about Khan.

Why are all the female Orions green-skinned with red hair? Is that some kind of new rule in AltVerse?

I don't think it is a big deal, before they have been always black. The green and brownish red make a nice contrast and work well together IMO.
If they reappear in future movies, it would be nice if they'd adress their culture, e.g. a few lines about how they escaped from the Syndicate.

Oh dear, I really hope this turns out to be a baseless rumour: IMO reboot needs to come up with it's own villains.

seek out new worlds, new civs and all that. Well let's see some of that. I don't want to see alternate Khan. I want to see something new. I really hope this is more rumor than fact, but at this stage, as Z said, rumors abound.

Wrath of Khan was such a well done movie that it would be very difficult to top, and if you bring Khan into this new universe in any capacity the comparisons will be natural. Not a good move. If you've made the effort to reboot the franchise, tell new and unique stories.

One would think that was the purpose of the reboot.

Don't kid yourself, Abrams isn't interested in saving Trek, and he won't stick to it for the long haul the way Berman did. He only sticks to a project for a few years, then moves onto something new. Trek won't hold his interest, he wasn't even a Trek fan prior to making the film! Trek was just his contribution to cinemizing TV shows from a by-gone era.
