Depends upon which "Star Trek" one is referring to. If you are asking how close it is to the Original Series (which it is based upon), then it's not very close. In fact, one could argue (and many have) that the movie is Star Trek in name only. Actually, when compared to TOS, the only thing this movie shares in common with Star Trek as we have known it for the past 43 years are the names. That's it. The characters' histories have been altered. The look of the entire universe has been changed. The philosophy of the Rodenberry-Trek has been altered. The alternate universe/reality plot gave the writers the opportunity to throw everything we have known about Star Trek completely out the window and start from scratch. So how close is this new movie to "Star Trek", not very. Not even close in my opinion.

I know that's what they wanted to do. They (JJA, et al) never actually came out and said so, but that was their intention. They glossed over it by saying they were going to "respect canon". But what we got was an alternate universe that completely obliterated the original canon and any continuity of TOS.

what is so wrong it's called expanding and creating you really need your head around it and face that fact.

Except for the fact that every single one of them knows that their lives have been changed by Nero, and that they have to proceed with that knowledge. The interesting thing is that while the Prime still exists, all the characters also have an understanding that this isn't perhaps how things should be.

I don't know, their intention was quite clear to me long before the movie came out. Now exactly how they did it witin the plot that's a different issue. But the idea of making it a completely different universe seemed quite clear to me.
