In my opinion the Excelsior is a very unusual and "fragile" design, fragile meaning that even slight modifications can make her look strange as opposed to a "robust" design like the original Enterprise which can be easily modified in several different ways (think about the Franz Joseph stuff).

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. The death of the NCC-1701 over Genesis is more dramatic than mothballing would have been.
