Gary Mitchell
JUst finished reading the "My Brother's Keeper" trilogy and it made me wonder if Gary Mitchell will appear during at least the Academey scenes.

Cheap-
That was a good triology of novels. But keep in mind, while great reads, they are not cannon. But fel the producers are missiing the boat if they don't use the Mitchell charater.

I think it might be a stretch. By the dialogue in Where No Man Has Gone Before, Kirk is at least far enough ahead of Mitchell at the Academy that he's Mitchell's instructor.

Gah, I don't have the book with me to look it up for sure... but isn't there also some backstory in "Where No Man Has Gone Before" where Mitchell 'saved Jim's life' at some point during their pre-Enterprise service together? I can't recall the circumstance, but Mitchell got injured pushing Kirk out of the way amid some battle/threat.
If I'm remembering this correctly, then they have a bit of history beyond the Academy instructor/student days. That, or I'm confusing this story with another character from Kirk's past... hopefully someone can call up the facts.

Has it been stated that Mitchell won't be in the film at all? I'd like him to be in it and established as an important character and Kirk's close friend. That way Abrams could kill him in a later movie and it would have some real weight, but we wouldn't lose any of the "real" Enterprise crew.

There hasn't been any word about Mitchell either way yet, JB. It's all just speculation, so anything is possible at this point. I think Mitchell comes up as a likely candidate just because he has history with Kirk which seems to fit this particular wedge of his lifetime. But it's no guarantee he'll appear because of that, either.

I'm not betting on it. We've gotten most, if not all, of the casting news, and nowhere has Mitchell been mentioned. In my opinions, it will be a pity if he's not in it, a lost opportunity to really have someone die (and stay dead at least until they filme WNMHGB2).
