Snyder's Genres
When it comes to storytelling, one of my major influences is Blake Snyder and his excellent story structuring methodology known as "Save The Cat!"
According to Snyder, and this has been borne out in my viewing and writing experience alike, films fall into a different set of genres than the casual viewer is aware of.
For example, romantic comedies and buddy cop comedies are actually the same genre, known as "Buddy Love."
Star Trek is in the same genre, roughly, as The Magnificent Seven or Jason And The Argonauts -- the "Golden Fleece."
Jaws and Nightmare On Elm Street are both "Monster In The House" stories.
