I think I'm more of a Trekologist...although I don't actually have a Trek degree I am the author of several Trek-centric posts.

As I've said over at the ST.com boards, a Trekkie is a fan of Star Trek, and a Trekker is a fan of taking really long walks.

Perfect! Well said!

I've been a Trekkie nearly my whole life and I'm proud of that term, thanks.

Trekker does sound better but I think Trekkie has more history to it. So I would have to say Trekkie.

Where I come from that's called a "bushwalker".

Although doesn't quite work as well, does it?

Perhaps if nobody knows what it is, then there is no distinction -- at least, none that matters.
