There's also the James Cameron/Steven Soderburgh version of "Solaris" which I think is one of the best REAL science fiction movies of the last decade. It totally flopped at the box office (a case of being "too hip for the room" if you ask me) But everytime I put it in the player, I'm just mesmerized for two hours... It's an amazing film... I wish to hell I had made it...

There's also the original "Flesh Gordon" from the 70's... say what you will about the adult nature of the film, it was also a training ground for some of the folks who created some of the best effects of the 1980's: Greg Jein, Jim Dansforth, Richard Edlund, Mike Minor, Bjo Trimble, etc...
It's just amazing how much they pulled off (so to speak) for under $200,000!
