I don't think it is necessarily the itty bitty details that made Trek (i.e. the direction characters look off to, the timing a a blink). You can allow Trek to be ruined if you concentrate on the little things.

First Contact was infact a big sucess, not just in star trek terms but in general movie terms, i would love to see star trek back up there. I think a lot of star treks problems is, and i know it sounds strange, George W bush. Now hes going things might look up across the world and we will have a bit more stability. People cannot simply take a side of politics that suits their philosophy. They have to paint the opposing side as downright evil and dastardly with no higher intention than to screw over the masses.

There is a scientific and psychological explanation for why people think like that. It's called being 15.
