Default Ferengi,just another enemy?

Were the Ferengi a great addition to the star trek universe, or were they just another enemy in space?

they were initially conceived to be the new bad guys on the block to replace the klingons since they were now allies with the federation. They got too comical for anyone to treat them seriously enough as a real threat so they came up with the borg and reintroduced the romulans.

In TNG they were just an other (quite stupid) new enemy.
In DS9 they were great and had some of the best scenes.

Personally, the DS9 episodes that featured Ferengi were my least favorite.

I think DS9 saved the Ferengi from totally disappearing off the map. Armin Shimerman's insights and portayal of Quark really opened them up as a race.

AFAIK Gene Roddenberry initially created the Ferengi as a kind of thinly veiled social comment on the worst aspects of capitalism.

Indeed. I used to mock my Yuppie college chums by making up new Rules Of Aquisition for them.
