I think a ship's computer much like Holly in Red Dwarf could add a new element to Trek. Not to mention numerous new story lines.

If I remember right, did not the Enterprise D create an artifical life form from it's holodeck? Or was it a new life form? I can not remember the episode to save my life. But I think it did.
