I would assume the Daedalus is a 23rd century vessel.
But with the formation of the Federation and the merging of technologies, I am sure a new class of ships would be needed. As someone allready said, maybe the NX class wasn't capable of these new ideas being incorperated into the existing spaceframe.

Note the design that is generally though not Canon Accepted as the Daedelus class... They look like they are probably a modular design. The Registry number of the Essex NCC 173 suggests that these were probably the ships that were the bulk of the fighting fleet during the Romulan War.. Possibly not even the Warp Seven ships but Daedelus to NX is probably more akin to how the B-24 compares to the B-17. The B-17 is a much more sculpted airplane but B-24s were turned out in bushels! NX is "Can we make this technology work?" Daedelus is. "Now we know it works we need to get as many hulls out as we can."

Daedelus to NX to me is more like a WWI Biplane is to a modern Jet Fighter, technology wise.
