I'd chose D over E any day.
I've been throught how badly the ship was designed but E is the begining of Trek ships leaving that old familiarity and losing the explorere quality.

I like both, but there are two ships nothing else can compare with: the Constitution-Refit and the Galaxy Class.
D! The ENT-E looks too aerodynamic, that's good for a small ship, but the E should be a battleship not a highspeed racer. The Ent-D just looks BIIIG, like a flying fortress. It seems to take more space than the E. If you had to put Galaxy and Sovereign into a box, the volume of the Galaxy box would be bigger. The E appears too small from some perspectives and only in ST8 when u see it the first time it creates a similar WOW-EFFECT like the huge, voluminös Galaxy Class created every time from almost every perspective.

I do belive the E is actually smaller. Starfleet banned families from Starhips after the Borg incursions and the Dominon, so I heard.

Ironically, when TNG wrapped up, the art department took the main Enterprise-D model and changed its registry to NCC-1701-E before they put it away in storage...just in case.
Memory Alpha has a photo of it somewhere in their archives, but I don't think they allow hotlinking...

The Enterprise-D was good for the series, but for the movies I think they needed a new and fresh design. The Enterprise-E was just that.
