Why is it that in Star Trek IV, she tells Kirk that she didn't have the opportunity to tell him about David's death, when she told already told him in Star Trek III? I mean, after telling him about his death again, Kirk seemed to feel worse. Look at his face after she tells him.

Initially, all she got to say was "David is dead". She didn't get to tell him that David had stepped in when she was about to be killed to save her. That was important for both of them to know. I don't think he feels worse. I think his look is "bittersweet"...he appreciates knowing his son died heroically, but is still in pain over the death.

Likely the producers thought it was necessary.

But, yeah... the idea that people may have not watched ST:III is plausible, so they needed to mention it in ST:IV
