It was a shame they killed her off as I was enjoying seeing the relationship blossom between her and Garek.

That said it was a great catalyst to unhinge Dukat and I think that an actually relationship would have damaged Garek's character, maybe that's how the writers saw it. That and the death of a major character at that time was effective and good for the sense of gravity for the show - that one of the only truly innocent characters in DS9 was to die.
