Default Star Trek Continues!

I hadn't heard of this until today. This is the first episode of a new TOS fan film series called Star Trek Continues. The production values are surprisingly good, and at least this first episode is good, and a guest star from TOS is back playing an aged version of the same character. And it got a rave review on Ex Astris Scientia, which is how I became aware of it.

Here it is on YouTube:

With New Voyages and now Continues, makes me wonder just how many original ST sets are out there. These sets look to be pretty good.

One of the things that nag at me about the NV episodes, is they don't seem to put the music where it belongs. These guys at Continues seem to have got it right.

And Chris Doohan has Scotty's expressions down pretty good.

Ugh. Chris Doohan's Scottish accent is even worse that James Doohan's... :P

Speaking as someone who lives in the city whose accent Mr Doohan claims to have based it on, I feel I am in a position of some authority to make such a claim.

Don't get me wrong, it's a very good impression of James Doohan, and the accent he used. But it's a homage to a bad imitation.

All these "guest star" appearances in these fan-films suddenly make me think of Galaxy Quest, where Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) talks about something to the effect of "ahhh...it's just another fan gig. They invite me to their place, they have this little tin foil set made up in their basement, I say a few lines, and then I'm done."

Actually, I think it's that Aberdeenites do a bad impersonation of James Doohan.

If you want Scottish accents in Trek, be careful what you wish for:

Taysiders in space. In amungst ye.

I like it. Production quality is good. Acting is not bad. The writing it what impresses me the most. It feels like TOS.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Lolani".

This episode hit all the right notes. Tugs at heartstrings in certain areas.

Excellent guest cast.
Lou Ferigno is a good actor. Plays a very convincing heavy (no pun intended). Seeing him in green again, I bet he was having Hulk flash backs.

Also among the guest cast was Daniel Logan, and if it's the same person I'm thinking of, he played young Boba Fett in Star Wars Episode II, and continued to voice young Fett in the Clone Wars animated series. He's a cool cat too. Got to meet him once. A real cut up....good with kids. Not that I have any kids, I just saw how cool he was around them.

Seeing Erin Gray was nice. Definitely showing her age in a low cut StarFleet TOS outfit , but her acting was enjoyable as always.

Excellent visuals and set production, top notch audio. Great story writing, and really good acting.

It's wild how these fan films are able to get a hold of some pro-actors for their productions. Phase II (Cawley's production) got Gil Gerard for "Kitumba" and now Continues got Erin Gray for "Lolani". Two of the best Trek fanfilm series out there got the two principals from Buck Rogers.

Fanfilms have certainly come a long way.
