Default Ew! That Warp Core!

I keep hearing people go ecstatic over the "new" Warp Core, as though we'd still have Giant Nuclear Reactors by the mid to late 2250's. Can anyone explain why the Traditional Warp Core was considered "Too Futuristic" when that new Warp Core looks like it could of came from the 50's? I mean, where is the right mix for Modern and Futuristic? Anyways, that's all my ranting about other's rantings on the New Warp Core.
