You're talking about the preview scene where the Enterprise is heavily damaged? You can see that the Deflector dish was damaged as well....it was missing a chunk of deflector. I wonder when they decided to switch from a copper dish, to a glass one.

Yeah, it was definitely in a preview.

As for when they made the decision, who knows? But, it is still a pretty small concession where other fans who dislike the new Enterprise design are concerned. Still though, with that, I stand by the notion that the overall design should not be changed. It's already established for this series of movies.... perhaps, over time, the design might see some changes, but they should not occur so suddenly that it jars belief.

Isn't the deflector dish illuminated? If it was damaged wouldn't that account for the different color? Being non active?

Very possible.

The refit Enterprise's nav deflector, when illuminated, varied in color from bright golden to bright whitish blue. And by default, when powered down, it was gray-ish. As to the variations in color when powered up, I don't know if that was a result of a difference in power levels applied to the dish, or if it was a visual glitch.

I agree with Tom and Martok that there shouldn't be any major changes to the exterior. But I don't think that there is anything wrong with minor changes that are hardly perceivable like in the case of the Enterprise E.
Same with the interior. A constant redesign of it like during the first six movies wouldn't be appropriate but some minor twitching, extending sets like main engineering that have been only seen partly and so on are OK IMO.

I think that is just standard PR talk which you might even hear, in a more moderate form though, if Paramount had not decided to blow up the budget and reach a larger audience than before as the goal of Trek movies has been and always will be to reach the general audience. The question is whether you dumb down your product in order to achieve this goal or not and IMO the last two movies have which is why I am a proponent of smaller budgets à la TUC or FC. Let's not forget that the movie which has been the most popular one for the longest time, TWOK, is the one with the smallest budget.

Abrams was addressing the need (and studio desire) to broaden the appeal but in fairness most of the films tried to appeal to general audiences. And for a while in the early 80's they did. Once they figured out the balance between cost and box office.

Leaving the 2009 film out of the equation, I think between the TOS and TNG era films, the TOS era films were the ones that more broadly reached a general audience. No technobabble to get bogged down in, and the Kirk, Spock, McCoy trinity is something that just about everyone (fan or not) can relate to.

I just never really saw the same interpersonal stuff in the TNG films. TWoK had the best opening moments, because it addresses a very personal issue with Kirk: age, and the desire to go back and command a starship and live as he once did, instead of being stuck behind a computer desk and being consigned to fade off into obscurity.
