In STXI we saw the first flight of the E so there can be no captain of the Enterprise before Pike so April would have to hold a different position ... so why use the character in the first place?

Right now I would bet on Khan due to the two ingredients from TWOK being used.

Not going to be Khan. From the interview with JJ on Trekmovie.com I discern that the hands on the glass and other aspects are simply nods to the old verse and don't signify a repeat of previous events.

Let me respond with the old Marx brothers joke: He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don't let that fool you, he really is an idiot.

In other words, this double-layer strategical thinking stuff, "they say A and it looks like A but it certainly isn't A, they just wanna fool us", is dubious at best.
I stand behind what I have predicted since over a year or two. Khan. Thrice in a row. Probably better than during the last two failed attempts but still an unprecedented creative standstill of the franchise.
