I think the crucial stuff is in the background and due to the smoking building there I definitely get some Cloverfieldish 9/11-exploitation vibes. After the optimistic portrayal of the core of the Federation in TOS, TNG and VOY and a realistic portrayal in DS9, ENT and the one or other movie I feel safe to predict based upon the last movie that this will be the era in which Earth will be portrayed fairly cynically.
Obviously this is heretical, there are some fairly loose basic principles that Trek has always adhered to and they exclude cynicism.
