At the time that there were nine movies (Empire Strikes Back would have already been in production) the middle three chapters were the only ones that actually conformed to a trilogy. Episodes I and II jumped dozens of hundreds of years forward in time (creation of the Republic, that sort of thing), leaving III to cover what eventually became the prequel trilogy. Think way, way back...in early versions, there were five main characters...the gallant knight/wizard, his faithful sidekick, the young princess, and the two droids...the knight/wizard was split into Obi-Wan Kenobi and Han Solo, the Princess into Luke and Leia.

I'm not very familiar with SW at that stage of conception. My understanding though is that when Lucas began shopping his idea around there was just one script/treatment, which upon further revision he began working the first third of that script into what eventually became the movie script.

I don't know at what stage he began conceiving SW as a multi-generation saga, although presumably that idea was in full force by the time Empire was greenlit.

Did anyone else (that is old enough to remember seeing Empire back in '80 in the theaters, and perhaps before even hearing anything about Lucas' supposed backstories for Star Wars) have a sense of surprise when they saw the opening crawl for ESB? "Episode V"?! What?!!!!!! What the hell did we miss?!!!!

The original Star Wars had no "Episode IV: A New Hope" subtitle until after it got released to home video, I think.

Episode IV: A New Hope was always in the opening crawl, but it wasn't considered a part of the original title of the movie when it first came out. It was just titled Star Wars.

I never got used to calling it A New Hope, it just sounds wrong to me. The original film is just Star Wars to me.

Episode IV was re-released to theaters in 1978, '79, '81, and '82 (basically every year that a new SW movie was not being released). The May '81 release print was the first one to carry the alternative title in the crawl.

The original (unnumbered) title crawl is preserved in the 'original edition' bonus disc included in the 2006 limited edition release.

It was before TESB. I got the book "The Art Of Star Wars" which has the complete ANH script in it when it came out, even then, ANH was the actual title and it was considered Episode IV. So we're talking late 1977/early 1978.
