Indeed. This grittiness has been a general trend in sci-fi during the last decade and BSG or ST09 even made the 9/11 origin of this darkness pretty explicit.
Of course sci-fi always reflects the Zeitgeist, when we naively believed that science and technology will solve all our problems in the 50s and 60s hard sci-fi authors like Asimov were quite popular. But sci-fi can also be more self-conscious, think ahead and decouple itself entirely from what is going on now. If Trek wants to be "dark" instead of contrast-intense (TUC, FC) it should work like DS9, independent of current trends.

One of the things that I think made this past film work was it's sense of fun, so I hope they don't lose sight of that in the sequel.

Ever since that 'other' popular ST movie (the one that I seem to rate higher than most fans do), humor and lightheartedness has seemed to be prerequisite to every new movie in the franchise for better or worse. Even if it boarders on slapstick.

I don't think the title (which itself I still can't say I've grown to like very much more at this point) signifies much that wasn't expected in terms of taking the new setting and simply getting (or attempting to get) more thematically serious and a bit darker.
This is something the films have flirted with to varying levels of success and it's certainly something the TV shows mixed in during their runs as well. I expect the general idea is along those lines, to tell something a bit more involving and hopefully satisfying now the first one is done. But I don't anticipate seeing Nolan levels of bleakness or depression (thankfully). That would be an unlikely level of tonal shift. Could be wrong of course.

Abrams was on Conan O'Brien, had a "three frame clip" of the volcano scene they released pics of the filming of a while back.
If you didn't see the clip, this was basically it...
