Indeed. This grittiness has been a general trend in sci-fi during the last decade and BSG or ST09 even made the 9/11 origin of this darkness pretty explicit.
Of course sci-fi always reflects the Zeitgeist, when we naively believed that science and technology will solve all our problems in the 50s and 60s hard sci-fi authors like Asimov were quite popular.
But sci-fi can also be more self-conscious, think ahead and decouple itself entirely from what is going on now.
If Trek wants to be "dark" instead of contrast-intense (TUC, FC) it should work like DS9, independent of current trends.
