Some on the set photos of Cumberpatch battling Spock and Uhura have been leaked online. Cumberpatch doesn't look "scary" to me in those shots. In fact, he doesn't even look like an alien. Maybe his performance is "scary"? I don't know what to make on Kurtzman's comments. Scary, to me, in Star Trek, meant villians like the Borg, or Species 8472. I never found human looking villians like the Q, Trelaine, even Khan "scary".

I imagine he's talking up the performance angle.

I think human characters in films can certainly be menacing, scary and even downright horrifying in film. But, yeah, leaked unofficial still shots will not tend to do that.

It's kinda like how some folks reacted to the new Enterprise. Might look like crap in still shots, but in motion is a different beast altogether.

And Trek does not get "REDUCED" to Star Wars. They are apples and oranges. I really get sick and tired of this pretentious "Trek is better than Wars" or "Wars is better than Trek" b.s.

That would be interesting in the perspective of Uhura in the scene. Women are often used in this way.

Have you seen Benedict Cumberbatch act? Of course it's going to be his performance. He's just not the kind of actor ANY career-conscious director is going to want to cover up. He has this thing where his whole performance is simply trying to convince you that he is better at acting than anyone else. And he has pretty much everyone convinced.

What ever happened to creating drama by means of just plain good writing...why all this cheating. Abramss talks a good game but I'm not falling for this again.

I won't be falling for it either. I will not see his next Trek parody in the theater. I may...possibly...see it when it comes out on one of the movie channels. But it's unlikely. Abrams/Paramount will get no more money from me.

Indeed, I hesitate to make that investment when this is supposed to have been my favorite genre reborn. Instead it's reincarnated Star Wars. And I'm disappointed enough at Star Wars. What an awful combinations of disappointments.

I agree to an extent. I am a Star Wars fan as well. I wasn't impressed with episode 1. Ep2 was a little better. And Ep3 was killer. Of course the original trilogy can never be equaled by any newer incarnation of Wars. However, Wars and Trek are technically of two different genres. Trek is Science Fiction while Wars is Science Fantasy. The two are almost like oil and water. They shouldn't mix. Abrams has attempted to inject way too much Star Wars into Star Trek and has thus destroyed what Star Trek is. He has diluted Trek's uniqueness by making it just another generic action/adventure/stuff go boom flick for the short attention span generation. And that makes me very angry. And sad.
