While reading the same blog that I linked to before I found another user of the site had posted a link to this article as well, which I thought I would also do because although it is but one person's theory about the underlying nature of what 'Prometheus' might really be about (and maybe where future films could go) I found it be a very fascinating read that retrospectively made me think about some things within the film again.

This is obviously very spoilers heavy so if you haven't seen the film, best to wait until you have. In the meantime I thought I would share it to see how other people who have seen the film respond to it.

This certainly does not I think factually or definitively explain everything in the film, but like I said, I found it rather an interesting read.

This certainly does not I think factually or definitively explain everything in the film, but like I said, I found it rather an interesting read.

The Space-Jesus theory is a little absurd sounding to me. I'm glad that wasn't explicit. To me the story is a bit of a meditation on God and death. Does man need God, or Gods, even in the modern age of space flight? Modern technology can extend and preserve life, but it couldn't save Weyland from aging and inevitable death. Man seeks to meet his maker. Why? Because he can? That's why he makes androids like David? That's why he imitates God? Since he's not immortal, he must create something that is, that reflects his nature? After all this, why does Elizabeth still believe? Even with all our technology and feats we are still vulnerable and mortal, that's why we must believe? Because we can't control our own fate and live in fear? It's a very thought provoking film, while remaining entertaining, suspensful, and visually stunning.

There are aspects over both these theories that I like, but when it comes to one of the characters I think it depends on how you perhaps view the prologue of the film. But I still don't want to say too much by accident for anyone yet interested in seeing the film.

I finally saw it. And I have no idea what to think. I think I liked most of it. Parts of it I enjoyed so much my attention became distracted.

Most of the irrational things I've heard about (characters behaving stupidly, etc) were addressed within the script, and seem to me more as anal-retentive nitpicks rather than actual problems. However there are two glaring exceptions. And I don't think the script's addressing them resolved them for me.

In addition, one confrontation felt borrowed from ALIEN 3 (how do you square-root that title, BTW? I've seen it done on other message boards), right down to the exact shot framing and nuance: "Why don't we take her head, and SHOVE IT THROUGH THE F-KING WALL!" (I forget what the line was in this movie, but everything else was the same)

Another scene recalled an ethical dilemma from the first film. And though I absolutely relished in the messy results, I disliked the sense that the movie itself seemed to be taking sides.

And one sequence was so insane in its immediacy that it seemed like reality had shifted into an alternate universe later when almost nobody thought to mention it. Don't you want to know what to do with the specimen? I mean it's just sitting down there. I'm hoping the Director's Cut fixes this.

And one character dies with a kind of denial that I only hope I can muster in the final moments when I leave this world... if only out of mortal arrogance. It was a kind of denial that even Bill Paxton did not express when his defiant cursing finally gave way to screaming.

Loved the use of Jerry Goldsmith's A L I E N theme for the Weylend character.

Wish the movie in general could've been more analogue. As it was, it felt more like a sequel than a prequel. Not just in the scope, but in the texture and speed with which things move. Hyperspace travel being the most obvious example. I miss Parker yelling "Spit on it for motherf-king two minutes would you for Christ's sake!" Also the engineers felt very obviously CG.

From everything I've read, I was expecting to be more lost. I was expecting to 'miss' lots of things because of not paying attention. I thought I was 'supposed' to have questions. But I don't. I'm more overwhelmed by what-do-I-even-remember-seeing more than anything else.

The only 'question' the film didn't answer, it made a big deal about not answering. And I did not get the impression it was big enough for Scott and Lindelof to already have an answer mapped out in a sequel outline.

The final scene was even more obvious than anything I could have anticipated (go ahead and turn that sentence over a couple of times). Did it feel too fan oriented? I think maybe it did. I can't really tell anymore. I have nothing.

If only when the movie, when it was good, wasn't so very good.

You caught Goldsmith's theme in there too, did ya? Good ear! It jumped right out at me, (given my love for a lot of scores from the late 70's through early 90's) and it was a question I was going to ask other folks here who'd seen the movie, if they'd noticed it....and I was going to put it in spoil tags, but the spoiler tags don't wanna work for me.

This wasn't the first ALIEN universe movie to reuse prior film series music either. ALIEN RESURRECTION also used some of Jerry Goldsmith's original theme near the beginning of the movie. But I thought the Goldsmith theme in this movie was a nice way to further connect PROMETHEUS to the ALIEN universe.

Some of Horner's main title music resembled Goldsmith's leitmotifs as well, often in conjunction with whatever classical piece was used for Discovery in 2001. And of course the actual cut-and-paste tracking of Goldsmith's 'horror' cues after Horner got called away to his next project.

I also really like the ALIEN 3 score... even though it doesn't have any Goldsmith.

Yes, Elliot Goldenthal's score for ALIEN 3 was very good. ALIEN 3, honestly, was a movie that grew on me. When my mother and I first saw it in the theater, our initial reaction was..."Hmmmmmm..."...but with later viewings, I really came to appreciate what it tried to be. But yes, the score is probably the best part of that movie.
