Back in July we reported on news that Star Trek director J.J. Abrams was "moving towards a commitment" to direct the sequel to the 2009 hit. Now comes news that Abrams has officially committed to the project. Vulture confirms the news, reporting that pre-production on the sequel is currently underway. Even more important, the site reports that the script — written by Alex Kutzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof — is expected to be completed by the end of the month and Abrams will begin shooting the film this winter. There’s still no update on when the sequel will be released. As we’ve previously reported, Paramount delayed it’s release earlier this year (it was originally set for June 29, 2012–now its TBD) and has already slated the G.I. Joe sequel in the former slot. There are rumors that the film could slide into 2013 (perhaps summer or winter).

Nothing very surprising, good to hear the script is nearly done though.

The very fact that Trek is categorized internally together with another zombie blockbuster like G.I. Joe makes me wanna send some Klingons into Paramount HQ to straighten them out.

Most likely it will be summer if they can pull it off.

This is........to be fair.......probably the least surprising development about the film there could be.
At the moment based on the little analysis at the bottom of the attached article back when Paramount announced it's schedule changes, I'm inclined to agree with them that quite probably the weekend of May 13th 2013 would be the best date of the available options. December 2012 is simply too crowded as it is. http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3227&p=.htm

There's nothing to straighten out, it's not smart business to have two of your big movies competing against each other.

Still feels like we have a million years to go...
Nevertheless, I'm pleased to have NEWS!

They all will have aged physically by then and it might seem like the continuity gap between STII and III where time passed was only a few days/weeks between, but, in real time, Scotty and Bones were, to me, visibly much older and in one of their cases much heavier. ![]() |

Actually the Christmas holiday period can be very lucrative nowadays, as the last couple years have shown.
But there are already lots of big hitters planned for that month already the next couple years.
