I re-stumbled upon this non-verbal, score-only overlay for the chase and battle in the Mutara Nebula.
This whole passage and other parts of the score not heard here, but this evening replayed on my stereo, literally made me feel like I was back in the theater some 30 odd years ago. I though about how well the music went with and shaped the story. Best ST score and best use of score in any of the ST movies. Maybe that is part of what made this particular movie so great, a classic (human) story told by the music. This clip speaks volumes to me that mere dialogue could not express alone. I really wish that since the next movie is not going to be released soon, that someone would have the courage/guts to re-release this movie as if it were a first-run movie, that is, in a wide re-release. Give people a view of ST not seen as such for too long. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7w18yZdeRl4 |

STII had a great score, the battle in the Mutara Nebula being one dramatic piece of it. I still like to listen to it in stereo from time to time. The soundtrack to STII is one of the few ST soundtracks that is actually listenable for me from start to finish. James Horner did a great job.

Horner's score for the 3rd film is also first rate.

They do kind of go hand in glove, don't they? Nice flow happening there...

It is a great score, possibly my favourite.
If you go onto youtube and look for the Aliens soundtrack, listen to the first minute and a half of the second to last track... Horner did some recycling. |

They did some recycling between STIV and Bakshi's Lord of the Rings, too.

Oh that's interesting. I never listened to the LOTR soundtrack, but know the TVH soundtrack note by note XD - which track of LOTR should I check out for comparison?

Horner is a huuuuuuuuuuge recycler................but early on he was actually really good. His TWOK and TSFS scores are well done.
He's a bit bland nowadays though, I tend to find.

NCC-73515: I don't own the soundtrack to the 1970s LOTR, but mostly I remember the final fanfare when Gandalf rides into battle towards the end of the movie. They're not note-for-note or anything, but like the internet gag goes, 'once you've seen it...'
