Looks like the producers on TNG got lazy and tossed in a Constitution hull for dramatic debris that the Enterprise could fly through.

It probably had more to do with cost, this was stuff they had laying around?

I'm yelling "Bingo!" on that one. Makes you wonder how hard it would've been for the studio to buy a couple of AMT kits, paint them, and toss them in a cluster scene like that...
