It's about time! I mean, we have yet to focus on any gay characters in Trek. It will really open doors to society and hopefully allow them to accept all genders. Sulu was the first major thing to hit Trek. And it was all accepted within the community. Us, as Star Trek fans, I have found out, are more open than most average people. I mean, if you think about it, Trek is far more open to explore new things than Wars.

Trek doesn't need identity politics.
Of course I am not opposed to gay characters but their presence doesn't make the story progressive or controversial or whatever. Especially not while EmoSpock and JerkKirk behave like rotten teenagers instead of Starfleet officers.

Let's take "New Voyages - Blood and Fire". It is not a bad story but it is far inferior to any other Trek story I am aware of that has dealt with sex precisely because it treated the issue in a, pardon the pun, straight way and not in sci-fi mode.

@Quark: I totally agree with you about Wars. It's fun and nice to watch but the underlying philosophy is inspired by Buddhist or New Age thinking. Trek on the other hand is basically inspired by progressive-military thinking. None of this "bring balance to the force crap"; while we the Feds want peace and prosperity for everybody we also expect our citizens to excel and if somebody screws with us our tubes are loaded.

Hard to see how they would make it work as part of the storyline.

The next TV Series should be called STARFLEET!

It would be funny if Nero and Ayel were a couple. Afterall, Nero's first words in 25 years at Rura Pethe (spelled correctly?) was "Ayel"
"Hi Christopher, I'm Nero"

I kinda like the post that (I think it was guy #3 on the comments on the article) wrote about it.

I'm more than happpy for it to be shown as no big deal by the 23rd/24th C, but it's hard to perhaps intergrate it into a storyline that's likely to be much larger than 'who is sleeping with who tonight'.

As such, I don't think it's essential per se and probably better saved for a TV series anyway.
