I thought you guys might get a laugh out of this, or at least a roll of the eyes ...
I got the 10 movie box set for Christmas. My wife (not a Trek fan in the least) and I sat and watched the ones she hadn't seen (3, 5, 6, & 9). Guess which ones were her favorites? Yup, The Final Frontier and Insurrection. Least favorite? The Undiscovered Country. No idea what this means, but I got a kick out of it.

I'm not big on any of those ones.......so not sure what it means either.

TUC has the blood scene while INS has a slomo hummingbird.

About the original post, had there never been a Star Trek I-IV, and "Star Trek-The Final Frontier" was the first "Star Trek" movie, the movie would have been a bit better received.
Its only because each movie improved over the previous one that Shatner's movie was as disappointingly received as it was. People were expecting something new and fresh and mostly, Trek V was a rehash of a lot of elements we had already seen. So I'm interpreting that for a non fan, "V" may have been as good as any of them as there are some warm family elements to it. |

Actually, I would totally agree with that.
If TFF had been made within a few years of TOS itself ending it probably would have gone down a lot better because it was more like TOS in many ways than TMP and then the mini-trilogy of TWOK-TVH. Unfortunately, it wasn't.

After watching all of them myself now, some of which I hadn't seen in a few years, I've reevaluated my opinions on some of them.
While TMP was great in '79 (after being Trekless for a decade) it just doesn't hold up. It takes itself too seriously, and some of the acting is atrocious. TWOK is still a great movie, but would have been better with a bigger budget. The Carol/David part is unnecessary IMO, but hey. TSFS isn't as bad as I remembered, but again would have been better with a decent budget. TVH is still one of my all time favorites. TFF is not as bad as I remembered. Shatner has been unfairly judged on this one. TUC is still one of my all time favorites. GEN isn't bad, but not as good as I remembered. FC is still one of my all time favorites. Alice Krige plays the creepy female lead better than anyone in my generation. INS is not as bad as I remembered. Could Donna Murphy be any hotter? NEM is worse than I remembered. Completely unnecessary in the series.

I'd agree TMP took itself more seriously than the TV series ever did, to it's detriment.

The Rodd had some nice ideas but he was never good with characters.
