Well it now seems that Super 8 is indeed the Abrams/Spielberg collaboration and it has been written and directed by Abrams on the quiet.

I'm intrigued by this! Is he going for a Close Encounters feel or something else Spielberg-ish? Irregardless, I'm a fan of Spielberg's early hits (& misses) and it seems like this will be similar.

I read something elsewhere that rumoured it was set in the late 1970s (the other article confirms 1979) and that it would involve a train carrying 'material' from Area 51 that crashes and then the story connects with a bunch of young kids.
I think I can see echoes of some 70s Spielberg and potential in that kind of idea - but it will depend on how it's actually played. It has potential, I think. Abrams himself is a solid director and he's written it himself. I will be intrigued how this plays out.
