IMO, the safest bet was that Star Trek XI wouldn't get nominated for any major awards. As much as Trekkies may luv the movie and all, I don't think that love extended to the Academy, who still may look at it as being "just another Trek movie" when all is said and done. It really doesn't matter what we think about the movie, because we're not the ones deciding on the nominations.
You can hate on the Academy and call 'em morons or whatever, but to them Star Trek XI was just one of many movies released in 2009 and not some kind of big event they were waiting years for like most of us did. It might have been a different story had it not been for Avatar, which might have "out-Trekked" Trek in the sense that it took audiences (including Academy voters) someplace they hadn't seen before.

![]() Ok, the budget was bigger and therefore effects, camera techniques etc.pp. once were state-of-the-art. But what else was better than in former Star Trek movies? Why should STXI win best picture, when STVI or STII didn't?

Star Trek was no where close to wining an Oscar on anything.
It was bad in writing and was far from best picture as you could get. I'm completely dismissive of the Academy but they got this write. Trek underachieved and you can tell by how many... Trek At All Cost Fan loved it. In there eyes Trek can do no wrong as long as the fix is satisfied. I don't think Trek is actually brain dead. They brought the body back but it's a sack of meat. I think Star Trek, because of these Trek At All Cost Fans will suck Toes from here on out.

I agree with Commodore in that things may have been different had it not been for Avatar, Star Trek would have had no chance against the cinematic quality that Avatar gave us so visual effects would have been a no, definitely not best picture or acting, still would have been nice to have got the sound mixing one.
Still we shouldn't get too upset and lose focus, like starwarsrcks said, it has brought Trek back from the dead and back into the mainstream... so good times there |

But if the Academy doesn't want to embarass itself a best picture award musn't go to a merely entertaining movies, it has to offer something more, some artistic elements. Actually as good as Avatar is, Avatar doesn't deserve the nomination, too.

When has a Star Trek film been a major Oscar magnet? Never. I'm kinda used to it by now. Quote:
Of course, I tend to think the Academy made those calls correctly as well.
