I think there's an element of that in a lot of awards ceremonies nowadays, rather than being specific to the Oscars.

IMO - at least G.I Joe got deservedly bumped out.
I'd guess Avatar, Star Trek, 2012, District 9 and maybe Harry Potter for the finalists.

I would hope that ST gets to the final 3 but even then Avatar is likely to win, damn if it was any other year and ST was nomiated it probably would have walked this award.
